The Charleston Marriott Town Center hosted the 2014 WVDHA 6-Hour Continuing Education Mid-Winter Meeting on Saturday, January 18th, and the Charleston-Marriott Events Manager, Larry Walker, proved that Charleston, West Virginia was "back in the saddle again" and fully operational, despite the water emergency only one week prior to the event. With over 30-Bridgemont Dental Hygiene Students registered in addition to innumerable other WV RDHs and international speaker, inventor, clinician, and author, Anne Guignon, RDH, MPH confirmed and flying in from Houston, Texas, the WVDHA Executive Board agreed,"The show must go on!" WVDHA Vice President, Delegation Chair, & Events Chair, Dawn Dean, RDH, MSDH, worked tirelessly behind the scenes with WVDHA Secretary-Treasurer, Sharon Hinchman, RDH, MSDH, when the Charleston-Marriott initially had to cancel the event. Within a 48-Hour window, Ms. Dean and Ms. Hinchman had the meeting moved two times and marketed updates via the wvdhaSMILE.org website, e-mail and Facebook. Ms. Dean stated that, "Dental Hygienists thrive in emergency situations. We were born to multitask under pressure, remain positive, and keep smiling!"

And smiling they did, as WVDHA President, Gina Sharps, RDH, MPH, greeted the arriving attendees with event corporate sponsor, Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Academic Manager, Debbie Fleming, RDH, while Charleston Marriott Events Manager, Larry Walker, rolled out the "Red Carpet" for the WVDHA and all of the event attendees, too, throughout the day! The generosity and fun continued with the Crown Seating corporate event sponsorship, as Anne Guignon, arranged for the WVDHA to raffle her own operator stool design, "The Queen Anne Modified Saddle Operator Stool." Pat Fulcher, RDH, from Charleston, WV, won the "Queen Anne" stool, and the WVDHA raised $630 through the event attendees' generous raffle ticket purchases. Dawn Yost, RDH, RN, MSN, won the WVDHA Raffle Basket "Grind Coffee, Not Teeth" assortment of WV Premium Blends to cap off a winning event day!

The WVDHA would like to extend its gratitude to this year's 2014 Mid-Winter Meeting Continuing Education Event Sponsors: Crown Seating, Orascoptic, Young Dental, and the Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc.! On behalf of the WVDHA, Ms. Dean applied for a Colgate Event Sponsorship Grant and received $750 from Colgate to subsidize the dental hygiene students' registration fees. Ms. Dean emphasized the WVDHA's "DH Student Incentives Focus" and the importance of mentoring the future of our dental hygiene profession through student event participation and networking opportunities. Ms. Dean said, "The WVDHA loves their WV DH students!"

The WVDHA Executive Board were extremely grateful to Anne Guignon, RDH, MPH, for presenting two, amazing, 3-Hour CE courses: "What does biofilm have to do with chronic disease, persistent wounds and recurrent infections?" & "The sick generation - Sipping, munching, crunching, couch potato kids". Anne is a grassroots dental hygienist with worldwide appeal! The WV DH students and RDH attendees loved Anne's infectious energy and heartfelt professional passion. Anne urged the event attendees to "save a life" each day of their professional lives! Using product research to back up her professional toolbox favorites, Anne highlighted the event corporate sponsors, Colgate, Crown Seating, Young Dental, and Orascoptic, as every event attendee received an incredible corporate sponsored carry-all bag stocked with new, product samples. Though it had been a decade since Anne's last visit to West Virginia, the WVDHA was proud to host her return visit and share the "Almost Heaven" mystique with an equally impressive industry giant.
