On Saturday, October 12, 2013, the WVDHA celebrated the 100th RDH and the 75th WVDHA Anniversaries, in addition to National Dental Hygiene Month, at the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, WV. Gathered for the event were the WVDHA President, Gina Sharps, RDH, MPH, WVDHA Vice President & Delegation Chair, Dawn Ann Dean, RDH, MSDH, WVDHA Secretary-Treasurer, Sharon Hinchman, RDH, MSDH, ADHA District III Trustee, Michele Braerman, RDH, BSDH, presenters Dr. Peter Ngan, WVU School of Dentistry Orthodontics Dept. Chair, Dr. Bob "Coach" Wanker, WVU School of Dentistry Assistant Dean of Student and Alumni Affairs, Therese Bonasso, RDH, BS, BA, & Lisa Stillman, Xylitol Educator and Northeast Regional Representative, WV Dental Professionals & DH School Students from WVU, Bridgemount, & Southern.
Attendees were treated to many happy surprises throughout the day! Dr. Ngan wowed the crowd with an award winning rendition of "Ortho-Trivia Family Feud" and then crooned "Country Roads" with true, "Mountaineer Pride!" Dr. Wanker revealed some very familiar faces from the WVDHA Executive Board as "Early Pioneers" in Infection Control, gave "Coach Tips," and credited WVU School of Dentistry, Division of Dental Hygiene, Professor Emeritus, Carol Spears, for the current exemplary infection control standard used by the WVU School of Dentistry, Dental and Dental Hygiene Clinics. Therese presented the "RDH Perspective" of "Early Orthodontic Intervention," while Lisa Stillman brought to life the clinical and public health applications of "The 5 W's in Xylitol." In addition, two, newly appointed WV Board of Dentistry members were in attendance and acknowledged: Mary Beth Shea, RDH(WVDHA Member)and Dr. David Edwards. WV Governor Earl Ray Tomblin made the appointments a few days before the WVDHA meeting!
The "100th RDH & 75th WVDHA Anniversary Celebration Luncheon" was followed by a commemorative cake cutting ceremony led by WVDHA President, Gina Sharps, WVDHA Vice President & Delegation Chair, Dawn Dean, and ADHA District Trustee, Michele Braerman. A delicious, white on white, raspberry filled cake was topped with the Circa 1938 WVDHA State Seal/Logo and created by Bonnie Belle's Pastries of Clarksburg. Following lunch, ADHA District III Trustee, Michele Braerman, collectively installed the new, 2013-2015, WVDHA Officers: Gina Sharps, RDH, MPH, WVDHA President, Dawn Dean, RDH, MSDH, WVDHA Vice President & Delegation Chair, & Sharon Hinchman, RDH, MSDH, WVDHA Secretary-Treasurer. Ms. Braerman presented each officer with a boxed red rose wrapped with a lavender ribbon. The red rose symbolized the passion needed to be industry leaders and mentors, while the lavender ribbon represented the profession of dental hygiene and the importance of ethical, caring service.
Attendees were treated to a plethora of corporate sponsored giveaways from Colgate, Xylitol and Wrigley. Two raffle basket winners were drawn by Drs. Edwards & Wanker and the happy recipients walked away with an assortment of "Fine WV Autumn Wines & Chocolates" and a "RDH Public Health OHI Basket." Finally, generous donations supported the ADHA Institute For Oral Health, as promoted by WVDHA/ADHA IOH Liaison, Dawn Dean. ADHA District III Trustee, Michele Braerman, provided an ADHA Update and encouraged everyone to support Dawn's IOH Goal of $1,000 this year. To end the phenomenal day, WVDHA Event Chair, Dawn Dean, led the attendees and speakers in an exuberant "WAVE" of "Hip Hip Hooray" and a reminder to Save-The-Date of Saturday, January 18, 2014, for the WVDHA Mid-Winter Meeting 6-CEU Continuing Education Event at the Charleston Marriott featuring national speaker, author, & inventor, Anne Guignon, RDH!
